As industries globalize and become more competitive, price becomes ever more important. While corporations battle for market share and attractiveness, their bottom line and operating lean rises to the top of concerns. This case introduces readers to Tata Steel, Indias largest private sector steel producer and the cuts they are having to make in order to stay attractive. Tata Steel has a history of extreme CSR practices not only incorporating workers but extending to the local society. This case looks at how Tata Steel has to make some tough internal cuts, rolling back certain CSR practices in order to stay competitive. Tata Steel still uses their CSR practices as an industry differentiation. The last question is: Is it the corporation's, government's, or mixed responsibility for the well being of the entire community.
